About The Artist
Albert Bierstadt was a German-American artist alive from 1830-1902. He focused on documenting the rural western United States. He was active right after the time of the California Gold Rush.
Bierstadt first traveled west as part of a surveying expedition. The Union Pacific Railroad hired him to document the west. That resulted in him using his paintings to promote interest in the area.
